During the pandemic, a series of challenges affected ports around the world and in the United States. COVID-19-related shutdowns, labor shortages, record volumes of ocean freight, plus other factors led to serious congestion issues and an overall lack of reliability.
The congestion and lack of reliability impacted cargo owners, freight forwarders and others operating in the supply chain space.
The new Vizion Port Index is designed to give those cargo owners, freight forwarders and others insight into which U.S. ports are performing at a high level and which are struggling to handle containers.
The Vizion Port Index tracks performance at major ports around the U.S., including how long it takes for vessels to move from arrival to berth, how long vessels remain at mooring, plus how long it takes for containers to gate out after they have been discharged (known as dwell time). The Vizion Port Index also includes data on how a port’s performance has changed over the past 30 days compared to the previous 30 days.
The January 2023 Vizion Port Index
According to Vizion, the January 2023 averages at all 26 major ports around the U.S. were as follows:
- Vessel arrival to berth: 0.75 days
- Vessel at mooring: 1.11 days
- Container dwell time: 4.17 days
- Total: 6.03 days
- Percent change: -13.68
While we are seeing slightly longer processing times at ports around the country, Norfolk (4.51 days), Port Everglades (4.52) and New York/New Jersey (4.64) were among January’s best-performing ports. Philadelphia (-43.85%), Oakland (-25.49%) and Norfolk (-24.08%) showed the greatest month-over-month improvement.

If you need a container tracking solution to reduce costs, save time and streamline your supply chain, Vizion replaces manual, error-prone approaches with an API that pushes accurate location updates and ETAs to your ERP, TMS or other software system.
The Vizion API normalizes data from multiple sources for fast, confident decision-making. And those sources are already connected, giving you instant-on capabilities. Our data is the most complete and reliable available, including EDI, AIS, port/terminal events, plus more. We refresh these sources multiple times daily to reduce latency to 6 hours or less.
